France

  • Sources: The French dataset is compiled from official sources.
  • Update frequency: Monthly.
  • Postcodes: five digits, such as 06600 for Antibes; treat them as text because of the leading zero. France has about 6,000 postcodes for about 35,000 communes, so a postcode often covers several communes, and a large commune can have several postcodes: Ajaccio has 20000 and 20167.
  • Coverage: mainland France, Corsica and the overseas departments.

Finding an address

  • A postcode and house number don't identify a French address. Autocomplete needs the postcode, settlement and street.
  • streetNumber is a number. The repetition index after it (indice de répétition) is the premise: bis, ter or a letter, as in Rue de la Baume 10 bis in Antibes. Infer reads it from a line such as 75001 1 bis.
  • House number 0 exists: Rue du Bief 0 in Géovreisset is a real address.

Address fields

  • commune and settlement: both hold the commune. In Paris and Lyon the commune is the arrondissement, such as Paris 1er Arrondissement.
  • department: the département, such as Alpes-Maritimes.
  • region: the région by its current name, such as Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
  • Suggest on a postcode lists every commune it covers.
