Country information - Spain

General information for Spain, including naming conventions used and specific dataset characteristics.

  • Sources: The Spanish dataset is compiled from official government sources.
  • Update frequency: Monthly. The API is refreshed during the month.
  • Spain uses five-digit postal codes. The first two digits, 01 to 52, identify one of the 50 provinces or the autonomous cities of Ceuta (51) and Melilla (52). For example, 28001 is a postal code in the city of Madrid.

Details on data:

  • Addresses include the fields street, streetNumber, postalCode, settlement, municipality, province and state. The state field holds the autonomous community (comunidad autónoma), such as Comunidad de Madrid.
  • Postal codes are text: in the provinces 01 to 09 they start with a zero, such as 08002 in Barcelona.
  • Names that are official in two languages carry both forms, separated by a slash, such as Donostia/San Sebastián and Araba/Álava.
  • House numbers are returned as the source writes them: 03 and 3 are different addresses, and S-N (sin número) marks an address without a number.
  • One house number can have several entrances (portales), each with its own addressId. When a request matches several of them, the API lists their addressId values to choose from.
